-Congratulations Professor Kapanidis! Achilles has been appointed Professor of Biological Physics at Oxford.
-Three new papers to start the summer off... Javier's paper 'Rotavirus mRNAS are released by transcript-specific channels in the double-layered viral capsid' has been accepted by PNAS (Early Edition link) ; Johannes's paper titled 'Conformational landscapes of DNA polymerase I and mutator derivatives establish fidelity checkpoints for nucleotide insertion' has been published in Nature Communications (link) ; and a collaborative paper with the Heilemann & Cook's groups titled 'Multiscale Spatial Organization of RNA Polymerase in Escherichia coli' has been published in the Biophysical Journal (link). Congrats to everyone!

-A big farewell to two long-standing members of the Kapanidis lab - Dr Johannes Hohlbein, and Dr Ludovic Le Reste. They contributed so much to the lab and will be definitely missed! Johannes is now setting up his lab at Wageningen University, The Netherlands, and is taking Andy Cuthbert (MPhys rotation) with him as his first student. Ludo has moved to Switzerland to continue his scientific endeavours in industry.

- Brilliant news! Achilles Kapanidis was awarded a European Research Council (ERC) starter grant worth €1,490,000 for the project POLMACHINE (single-molecule analysis of DNA polymerase mechanisms). Congratulations to Achilles and the entire crew! The project will start in February 2011. Look out for announcements of post-doctoral fellowships soon.
-Switchable FRET has been featured in a recent article in Biotechniques.
- Our paper, 'High temporal resolution and linked hidden Markov modeling for switchable single-molecule FRET,' on an important extension of switchable FRET has been accepted to ChemPhysChem; congratulations to Stephan, Kris, and Geraint!

  • October 2010: A big welcome to three new members of the lab:
- Diego Duchi Llumigusin who has decided to continue for a DPhil after a successful Part 2 Biochemistry Master's project working on vesicle encapsulation of fluorescent biomolecules.
- Sam Roots who has joined us from the Industrial Doctoral Training Centre (IDC) to work on the development and application of a compact instrument for single-molecule biosensing.
- Pouya Shoolizadeh who has joined us for his part 2 Biochemistry Master's project to work on the conformational dynamics of DNA Polymerase.
  • September 2010: Farewell to Yusdi who continued to work with us over the summer. Yusdi has now moved to Indonesia to work as a management consultant at The Boston Consulting Group and we wish him every success in the future.
